Anglo-Francophony

for Oboe, Oboe d'Amore, Cor Anglais & Harpsichord

This programme features music from England and France, both past and present. Highlights include a beautiful Classical sonata for oboe and harpsichord by François Devienne, two modern revisions of traditional French tunes for oboe d'amore and harpsichord by Edmund Rubbra, and a wonderful passacaglia for solo harpsichord by Louis Couperin. This programme is suitable for all types of audience, but particularly those with some knowledge of classical music.

The Grand Tour

for Oboe, Cor Anglais & Harpsichord

We follow the established practice of young 18th and 19th century aristocrats undertaking the Grand Tour by commencing our foreign visit in Italy, where we explore music from both the early and late Baroque periods, before moving on to Germany. Here we find J.S. Bach to be at the height of his powers in one of his longest, most intricate and powerful obbligato sonatas - the famous oboe and harpsichord sonata in G-minor, BWV 1030. In the second half we explore the music of England and France, contrasting 18th-century works with those from the 20th century. We conclude with Handel's remarkably joyful F-major sonata Op.11/1, which is guaranteed to put a smile on every face.

This programme is suited to all audiences, but particularly those with audience members who are slightly less familiar with classical music, and who would benefit from a large degree of variety in the programme. The conceit of the Grand Tour is maintained throughout the concert as we introduce each piece, resulting in a fun and informative evening.

This programme contains plenty of variety suited to all types of audience, and includes two famous works: Handel's "Harmonious Blacksmith" variations for solo harpsichord, and J.S. Bach's delightful sonata BWV 525, originally composed for the organ, but played here on oboe and harpsichord.
